Global Soap Project…

The Global Soap Project recovers and recycles soap from American hotels then sanitizes and remolds it into new bars. The soap is distributed to refugee camps in Africa.

With more than 4.6-million hotel rooms in the United States, an estimated 2.6-million soap bars are discarded every day. What is typically thrown away can be a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of displaced persons, who can lower the risks of acute respiratory and diarrheal diseases. Hand washing with soap can reduce the risk of these diseases by 42-65 percent.

With over 14,000 pounds of soap collected, and witnessing firsthand the dedication it takes to keep such an operation viable, we are ecstatic to have been able to give a helping hand. But we at L3GACI know that more can be done….

“The issue is not the availability of soap. The issue is cost,” Kayongo said. “Make $1 a day, and soap costs 25 cents. I’m not a good mathematician, but I’m telling you I’m not going to spend that 25 cents on a bar of soap. I’m going to buy sugar. I’m going to buy medicine. I’m going to do all the things I think are keeping me alive”.

Please vote for Derreck Kayongo as 2011 CNN Hero! It’s just a small task to vote, but will give an awareness of what can be done to help others.
