Speaking with Chris Sims… “Loyalty Is Everything”

Over the past few weeks I’ve gotten the chance to get to know an interesting cat from California, discovering himself and his musical roots in Midland Michigan, continuing to grow personally and musically, figuring out what he wants from his life and music.

While chatting with him and getting to know him a little more personal than his twitter feed, I’ve gotten to understand his job, healthy eating habits and background, and was able to actually get a chance to see a glimpse of the many different sides that encompass who exactly Chris Sims is.

Finding inspiration early from artist such as Timbo and Aayliah however evolving drawing inspiration from ‘meditation’ style music to even some alternative, following the likes of 9th wonder beats and Quest. He discovered he can turn his writing passion into a musical passion, taking encouragement from friends and now working along side of names already featured on L3GACI such as ‘Diverse’ and ‘Shade Cobain’ he only continues to grow his network. Growing his network, growing his music, growing himself.

Lets take a look at Chris Sims words to discover more on his music, if you don’t know his words now, you will soon. Truly a L3GACI in the Making.

Coming from California to Michigan, how has that shaped your musical experience?

Well i moved out of my moms at 18, and i had no musical ability yet.. my journey actually started in a small middle class town knows as Midland MI,

What first caused you to get into the musical scene?

It was kind of random actually, i was 18 years old, it was my senior year of high school. English Class was 5 th period. i would keep poetry in my planner.. and one day a friend of mine saw what i had wrote.. he told me “You should rap this, My friend has a studio.” I was quite hesitant but went to see what it was all about.. I always had headphones in though Lauren, Music was my go too when i was feeling happy, sad, angry… i already had a passion for it.. but making my own was a whole new experience. It really was love at first mic.

Who has been a role model for you on your journey?

Well, when i first started the first Hip hop artist i talked to was “Diverse” he had making music like… 3-4 years already.. and i wasn’t even at 1 yet. we grew really close as artist and as friends.. so the respect and loyalty we have for each other is remarkable. 21, my In house Producer and Very close friend..more like a brother actually.. he played a huge role in creating my range as far as hip hop goes with certain sounds..and drum patterns.. he would push me to the edge 95% of the time.. we have been working for almost 3 years now.. so he knows what i like.. sometimes he re-sends some of the same beats i wasn’t feeling earlier that year..and suddenly i would be all for it.. so he’s another big role in my growth as an artist.

Now as of lately, i have added a few member so that roster.. someone that im building a strong bond with musically is an artist by the name of Yung Plus Anotha, out North Carolina. The dude is completely opposite of me.. you can tell he’s being himself on and off the mic.. realest artist i have met. He taught me a few things listening to his music.. as far as being comfortable in my own skin and just doing whatever the hell i feel as right on the mic.. and it works every time. the song that got changed my view as an artist was “It’s Real” it was the story of my life.. he say’s “Smartin up yung’n.. don’t let em simply you..get ya own identity & let’m recognize you.” There is a method to his madness.. and i plan to work heavy with him as well.. we motivate one another when it’s time to crank out the music.. “Loyalty Is Everything

Any influences that stick out in your mind and inspired you to pursue your music farther?

well, i listened to a lot smooth shit, Hip hop of course..but that was when Timbo, Aayliah, Busta Rymes, Dmx, EVE, Jagged Edge, Joe, Boys 2 Men, BONE THUGS played a huge roll as far as my sound when i play my slower songs.. that people like to vibe to. I hope you don’t hate me when i say this but i was never a Biggi or Pac fan.. my mother never listened to them.. so my influences are somewhat different.. As i got older i started listening to Tribe called quest.. a lot of 9th wonder beats… I listen to meditation music now, umm.. some Alternative.. I really feeling Cold Play.. lol and the honestly the people that push me most are the ones i work closely with now..
” i make music that symbolizing the moments we live”

Like other artist featured on L3GACI you have a style seeming to have a need to draw emotions from listeners, what do you hope your listeners to gain from your music?

Well i want them to know a variety of things.. the biggest would be to really try to find yourself. The question i was searching for, for so long was.. “Who Am I as a person?”  Through my music if you listen to most of my songs im going through life and putting my current emotions of experiences i was going through at that specific time. I want people to have fun.. i love to discuss my involvement with woman.. and make music about a few scenario’s i’v bared witness too. “Retrospecz” was kind of that variety when it came down to figuring out a sound and what my over all goal is an artist is. Im being myself and clearly that’s working.. so i plan to continue spilling my heart out some nights & having fun on other nights.. music is meant to hit a variety of feelings and emotions.. so that’s why i love to have variety on each project.

What do you bring to the table that sets your music apart from other artist?

Not worried about anybody above me..  Just in my bracket and who i see as my competition..  I think 1 thing that sets me apart is that I’m so indecisive in life.. and it helps my music. Currently in college and don’t know if i want to finish.. theirs always doubts, like every human being.. i see the world as a cruel place sometimes. Im a bit of a pessimist or realist. And i think that all comes out in my music as well… All of those things come out in my music. So i guess me being myself is what makes me stand apart from other artist.. theirs only one of me.. that should be a good enough reason.. Listen to what i say.. listen to my stories.. you will know who Chris Sims is…i promise.

I see you’re working with producers such as Shade Cobain, already featured on L3GACI, how has that experience been so far, and who else in the future do you wish to work with?

Shade Cobain is a very talented human.. everytime i BBM ( Black Berry Messenger ), he’s busy in the lab just vibing out to his work.. i love his sound.. his beats bring truth & some inner since of reality to my music. Im just trying to really wait for the right moment to make new music with him.. We need each others full attention to progress.. nothing can get in the way of his drive.. very talented.
As far as working with other producers..  trying to lock in “Sunny Norway” outta Chicago… 9th Wonder some day…  My Producer 21.. he’ brings the best outta me. Now artist im in the works with are Hope Wright, Chez Chit, those are two worth looking to collab with on a real personal level for this LP that is in the works.

What journey has your music been able to take you on?

It’s taking me on a journey of patience. This journey is full of stress, excitement, love, anger & frustration. My music has shaped me as the man that stand here before you today.. i don’t ask for much.. i know my priorities. I put the ones i love first and my music lol.. Im also less distracted as well.. i know what im good at. Musics also taught me to set goals for myself.. as an artist and in life… The journey continues.

As I’m typing this I’m listening to your mix tape, (currently playing on repeat, 2nd Sun) Retrospectz Mixtape, what has been your favorite part of creating that mix tape?

Actually there that was probably my most stressful body of work… but my favorite part of have to be just me in my studio alone..playing the whole thing from beginning to end for the very first time.. it was my body of work.. something i put time & energy into. couldn’t believe it. Only after 3 years of doing music.. I get so much praise on some songs.. I love that Mixtape so much.

Can we expect an LP or any songs avialble for purchase soon?

YES! “Light It Up” is available on DJBooth.Net its the first look off my LP.. Title TBA. im working hard and you should expect some promotions by Fall.

What are your plans for the future with your music, how far do you wish to see it go?

Honestly I don’t think about it.. Im a private, some what of a quiet guy off the mic.. i live a simple balanced life.. so all the craziness and hype as far as being famous goes.. I have yet to experience and however far my music goes.. I just plan to stick to my lifestyle and live peacefully.

As we always ask, What L3GACI do you wish to leave behind?

Well i expect my music to be my legacy.. The journey itself.. the understanding of who i am and what i have to offer as an artist and individual. i want to be remembered for all the hearts i touch.. all the smiles i bring.. and the excitement my music creates..i want to be remembered for making music that did all of those things..

How is your music Creating, Evolving, Inspiring society?

I can def say our generation has more awareness of the world we live in today.. as a society, i guess it depends on what type of listener I’m attracting. On and off the mic I’m more of an intellectual thinker.. so i hope that my music makes people take the time to stop and think about certain things in their lives.. & in life in general. The fun aspect of our society is they are just as carefree.. so i make music that symbolizing the moments we live
” i guess me being myself is what makes me stand apart from other artist.. theirs only one of me.. that should be a good enough reason.. Listen to what i say.. listen to my stories.. you will know who Chris Sims is…i promise.”

Having an “LP Focused” mind Chris is on the move. Staying on track he’s dedicated to dropping his first LP this fall. Already having “Light it Up” out for a listen and with his mix tape “Retrospecz” getting some buzz, his work is catching on. Getting noticed for all the right reasons and creating music for all the right reasons, like many artist featured on L3GACI, his music portrays a journey of many emotions that all can relate to.

Capturing these moments in time there is more to come from this up and coming artist. We see no limits other than that of what society sets and from our interactions with Chris, we’re learning he has the mind set to over come those. A mixture of pushing himself while keeping his cool, it makes for some interesting beats. Make sure to keep in touch with this L3GACI, for there are things to come… expecting his LP to hit this fall make sure to keep up on his social feed… you won’t want to miss this one.
