Have you ever just sat down listening to the radio and wondered about how much is involved in the creation of the song you are listening to? Speaking from a standard person’s view one might say, “man that sounds easy” speaking from being a former musician, I can tell you it’s not as easy as it looks or sounds. Whether it is rock, rap, r&b or metal, there is a lot that has to be taken into account as far as creation and production. Firstly I would say to anyone who is interested in this line of work, be very sure what style of music it is that you are trying to do (rock,metal,rap, etc.) then ask yourself, what kind of message is it that you want to send? What meaning is it that your sound holds? Again, speaking as a songwriter and vocalist, I try to speak about things I am passionate about. If you have a passion for the youth of America, then write about it. Do not concentrate hard about making it big the first day. IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN the first day. Find fellow musicians who share your passion for whatever genre it is that you are getting into. Make sure they are people that you can be comfortable with. Now, for me, mys style was post hardcore (a branch of metal) firstly, we needed a bass guitarist. A bass line is the blood of your band. Second the drummer, the beat that keeps the blood going. Third, a rhythm guitarist who follows bass and is in essence one of the last things you notice in a real successful metal band. Trust me, they are one of the most significant. Next comes our lead guitarist whose job is probably the most difficult, but if you get a good one it will be worth while. Lead usually consists of difficult and complex combinations of arpeggios, pinch harmonics, sweep picking etc. He or she will need to adapt to the other instruments and put forth a new twist that makes the song more interesting in the long run. Lead guitarists are sometimes the most creative members of the band. Your vocalist doesn’t exactly have an easy job either. I am currently a vocalist and can tell you it is much more difficult than it appears. Timing is everything for a vocalist and sometimes you have to write three or four versions before you can find one that suits you. It all depends on you. So people, if you choose to get into the music field, I encourage you to get out there and do it. Do whatever music it is that strengthens you and fuels YOUR passion. Are you going to just stand around and listen? Or are you going to jump for it? It’s your sound, it’s your L3gaci.
